Your grandma has one, your mom has one and you probably have one too. It is the single most common piece of furniture found in homes today. No it's not a bed it is a wood kitchen table that you eat at every day. And you probably use it for other things too. Like a desk, a mail holder and even a laundry sorter.

Well before you return wood kitchen tables to their original purpose, eating, you need to give it a thorough cleaning. Because as they say; a clean kitchen table is a happy one. Easy Decorating Tips That Help Sell Your Home

Buyers are emotionally drawn to homes that look up to date and feel "warm" and inviting. Not only do homes have to be clean, light, and spacious-looking, they need to have new and up-to-date touches to appeal to buyers. Here are some items to consider:

1. Slipcovers - if your home has old or patterned upholstery, give serious consideration to adding solid-color slipcovers to freshen and update it. Neutral colors are your best bet.

2. Paint - A fresh coat of paint to cover marked-up walls or strong colors will go a long way to giving your home that "clean, light and bright" look.

3. Remove wallpaper - in general, wallpaper is too personal to appeal to buyers, unless it is neutral grasscloth. It is best to remove wallpaper and re-paint walls with off-white, sage green, gray, or beige colors, in keeping with today's trends.

4. For marred or scratched kitchen cabinets/tabletops, use a wood refinishing product such as Restorzit to make them look good as new again, without sanding and restaining.

You can also use a hot glue gun to add bands of trim to the bottoms of the shades for a fancier look. Another option is to hang magnetic beads from the chandeliers.

8. Replace outdated switch plates with plain chrome or white ones.

9. Replace outdated towel racks and curtain rods. Wood and clear plastic curtain rods are out of date.

10. Create an inexpensive designer look on a coffee table by filling hurricane vases or apothecary jars with polished stones, glass beads, colorful candy or seasonal items such as acorns, pine cones, or holiday ornaments. A grouping of three always looks pleasing.

11. If you don't have a headboard in the master bedroom, create the look of one by hanging a large horizontal or three square or rectangular canvases. Alternatively, make an inexpensive headboard by having a big-box home store cut three panels of 3/8" plywood
18" by 18" (or two panels 30" x 30") for a queen-size bed, then paint them and hang on the wall. Black or dark brown paint/stain will give the look of a wood headboard.

12. MirrorMate frames are a great product for updating "builder standard" frameless bathroom mirrors.

13. Replace outdated brass hardware with chrome, brushed nickel, or bronze faucets or doorknobs instead.

14. Organic Touches - Plants, trees, and faux flowers add real warmth and beauty to any space. If you have a green thumb, by all means go for the real ones. Pier One, HomeGoods, and Michael's are excellent resources for faux florals.

15. Bring in trendy accessories, such as vases, fancy boxes, bowls with decorative balls, dark wicker baskets, white candles and candleholders, a new welcome mat, and perhaps a few new pillows for chairs, sofas, and beds.

16. Hang light-colored solid drapes (or drapes with a band of color that coordinates to another color in the room) in a fabric that fits the season - sheer, linen, or polyester (looks like silk for much less money) for spring and summer, heavier cotton for winter. Hang them up to the height of the ceilings when the ceilings are the typical 7 or 8' height, to visually "elongate" the windows. Keep drapes pushed to the side to let in the most light and show off the view.

How to Identify Quality Wood Types For Furniture

Wooden furniture is made from many types of wood. However, good furniture has some standardized characteristics that include durability and beauty as its primary qualities. And these qualities are instilled in the furniture by the use of good types of wood. So, the foremost rule for identifying quality wooden furniture is to assess the wood type used for making it. How this can be done? Here are some pointers to consider when looking for quality wooden furniture.

Hardwood v/s Softwood- Basic Types of Wood for Furniture

Wooden furniture is made from both types of wood- hardwood as well as softwood. Hardness of the wood makes a durable wooden furniture. However, if you go by literal meaning of both the terms, you can be disappointed because not all hardwoods are hard, and not all softwoods are soft. Hardwoods come from flowering trees such as maple, cherry, oak, ash, walnut, and mahogany where as softwoods come from conifers like pine, spruce, redwood, and cedar. The grains of any type of wood are determined on the basis of annual growth rings on a tree. There are many types of woods that have subdued and others that have clearly defined grains. These grains can again be of any type- straight grains, stripes, swirls, waves or curls, ripples, eyes, or with mottled effects. Colors of woods too range from white and pale yellow to red, purple, and blackish brown. You should check grain and color of the wood to identify the wood quality.

Hardwoods generally have a more fine textured grain as compared to softwoods. The wood types that have distinctive patterns are considered more valuable than woods with subdued or indistinct patterns, If you see that a wooden furniture piece has weak looking grained wood then it might have been stained to give them some character.

Tips for Checking Wooden Furniture for Quality

There are two possibilities where you might get a wooden furniture with compromised quality. One, you may get wooden furniture made from veneers & inlays and second, you might bring furniture made with two or more types of wood. Veneer is made with a thin layer of good type of wood glued to a base of less expensive wood or plywood. When more types of wood are used, the quality wood type is used for more visible portions like table top or body of chair and cheap wood is used for lesser visible portions like table and chair legs.

To check whether your wooden furniture has veneer, look at the edge of the wood surface- a thin layer glued over a base wood will be seen there. Compare the unfinished surface (like under the table top or chair seat) with the finished wooden surface. If there is some difference, it might be veneer. Similarly, look for signs of staining at the legs of furniture pieces to make out whether it has been made from different combination of woods. Staining and finishing of cheap woods are essential if they have to be matched with quality wood types!

How To Decorate Your Conservatory

The homeowner has moved into a place with a large, sunny conservatory attached to the south end of the house. It's empty now because the old owners took everything with them. Three of its four walls are basically made of glass and though the windows and doors can be opened, the room gets a bit hot on warm days. The homeowner assumes they'll need conservatory blinds. So, after moving furniture into the rest of the house and having a bit of money left over, the homeowner goes to work decorating the conservatory.
